Give your first idea a little room

A simple way to move from a blank canvas to a direction worth developing.

The blank canvas asks you to make every decision at once. It doesn’t have to.

Start with one thing you know: the message. Write it as plainly as you can. You can make it clever later, if clever actually helps.

Make three different bets

Try one direction led by type, one led by an image, and one built around a simple shape. Keep your message and brand constants the same.

You aren’t looking for three finished pieces. You’re looking for a difference you can react to. Which one makes the message easiest to understand? Which feels most like you?

Choose, then refine

Once you have a direction, stop opening new doors for a moment. Work on the spacing. Read the headline out loud. Look at it at the size someone will actually see it.

A small adjustment can make a larger difference than starting over.

Finish with a human decision

Tools can help you explore quickly. The final judgement belongs to you. Before you export, ask whether you’d be happy for this to be somebody’s first impression of your brand.

If the answer is yes, you’re ready to put it out into the world.
